Birthday Theme

It’s a Par-TEA!

Time flies so fast and our unica hija is turning 1 already! As the rhyme goes “Sugar and spice, and everything nice, that’s what little girls are made of”, we wanted to celebrate her first birthday in a cute and girly theme and the idea of a tea party sounded so appealing to us.

Our little girl turns 1!

Stacy’s is a quaint restaurant with a homey ambiance and offers a variety of feel good food. We learned about this restaurant while we were browsing the internet for ideas on decorations and venue. They have a positive feedback in many forums and blog reviews so we decided to contact them for a quotation.

It turned out that we have talked to the right people. They offer set menu, plus free use of the venue, plus decoration (balloon or floral centerpieces, party place mats and a handcrafted party banner following the celebration’s theme color) for their party packages. They also offer decor upgrades and/or customized dessert table for an additional fee.

It’s not hard to tell why Stacy’s gained a positive feedback. The look and feel of the restaurant is so inviting. The food served are delicious and even the presentation of the food is appealing. The staff are very accommodating. I have only one concern, they only have sound system in their BGC branch for the in-house music and you have to bring your own PA system for an additional corkage fee. But all in all, we are very satisfied with their service.

Now back to the parTEA…

Food being served is appealing both to the eye and taste buds. Since the afternoon slot was already occupied, we just reserved for the morning / brunch slot and thus we availed of the light lunch menu set inclusive of Tuna Melt Canapes and Classic Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken as starters, Spaghetti with Meatballs, Texas Barbecue Ribs, Herbed Cream Dory with Aioli Dip served with Steamed Rice for the main course, a round of either soda or iced tea, and either a slice of chocolate cake or a cupcake with theme-colored icing to top it off.

We loved how the dessert table added fun to the party. Both kids and kids-at-heart enjoyed the assorted sweets and pastries including macaron, lemon bars, cupcakes, cake pops, white chocolate coated mallows, twisted marshmallows, meringue, and colorful whistle candies.

All things nice and sweet 🙂

We wanted to have a unique take on the birthday cake for Candace and had a tray of assorted cupcakes with personalized toppers and one with a candle shaped like the number 1 instead of the usual birthday cake. We didn’t go wrong when we chose cupcakes from GIGI Coffee & Cupcakes.  Their cupcakes are a must-try! The cupcakes are moist and satisfying, not too sweet, each flavor of frosting is balanced with the cupcake’s sweetness, and are presented very well.

The birthday cake. Or should I say birthday cupcakes. 🙂

I know nothing about girls’ fashion so I let my wife do the task on hunting for our little princess’ dress. And I am very much happy with her choice. We first tried to look in shops and boutiques in malls if we could find a nice purple dress but we can not find the perfect dress so my wife  had a custom-made purple dress for Candace, accentuated by a nice pink ribbon and flower at the waist with a matching purple and pink headband.

Our princess pretty in pink and purple. 🙂

Loot-bags and giveaways

We looked in every nook and corner of 168 Mall in Divisoria in search for giveaway items, and to our delight found some cute novelty items. We placed these knick-knacks along with sweets and goodies in ecobags and just attached custom-printed dedication cards to give it a personal touch.

Shower towels with assorted colors are rolled to look like flowers and are placed inside mini tin buckets.
This cutesy Macaron Mini lamp / Paper weight is one of the prizes given in the parlor games 🙂

We loved the outcome of our preparation for Candace’s first birthday. It was all pretty and nice. Simple yet lovely. Sweet and fun. Just like our little girl 🙂

An Awesome Lego Birthday!

There are two things our son Cedric like most – Lego and going to the beach. Since we are currently residing in the municipality of Bolinao, home to the beautiful shores of Abrac beach in Patar, we decided to choose the latter in celebrating  Cedric’s 7th birthday. We initially planned to have a pizza and barbecue party by the beach to celebrate his birthday. But when Daddy Ben (my balik-bayan father-in-law) invited us to stay for vacation in Manila just two weeks before the birthday, we knew we’ll have to change plans.

Asked where he wants to celebrate his birthday in the Metro, Cedric said Mcdonald’s. It was quite logical for us since we didn’t have the luxury of time preparing for the venue or the food to be served wherein Mcdo has pre-arranged birthday packages inclusive of food and use of their function room, plus hosting and parlor games. Food and venue being taken cared of, all we have to worry about is the party theme. We wanted to make Cedric’s party a personalized one so we decided to make a Lego Batman themed party since we knew he would love this idea. But with only less than two weeks left for the preparation, we knew we have to be hands-on and improvise for everything – from the decorations, to the invitation cards, to cake, and to the loot bags.

Invitation Card

Running out of time for preparation, it is a relief to have a wife who knows how to Photoshop! 🙂

Cedric’s Invitation Card

For the decoration, we made a DIY birthday banner from pieces of styropor cut, glued, painted and shaped like colorful Lego bricks.  We also made a poster of his name patterned like the Lego logo. For this we used some red and yellow construction paper and a printout of his name using the Lego font. We just have to tape the  bricks and his name to the ready-made birthday banner in Mcdonald’s function room.

Materials used for the Lego logo and bricks banner are: styropor cut-outs, styro paint , and construction paper (cartolina).
Finished product! We will just tape these to the ready-made banner in Mcdonald’s.

Like in all of his previous birthday celebrations, we always make Cedric’s cake unique and truly stand out. And we couldn’t think of any other cake expert to do the job other than OC’s Kitchen. She always bakes amazing cake creations and we are truly grateful that she accommodated our request for such a short notice, considering her very hectic schedule.

Since we didn’t have time to go to the Lego store and buy a costume, we just had him wear a T-shirt with custom Lego Batman print and guess what? He loved the shirt!

Awesome, awesome, AWESOME! 🙂

We decided to use ecobags  filled with sweets and goodies for the lootbags. We just attached our DIY Lego Batman head made from cartolina to give a personal touch to the bags.

All in all, we think we had an awesome Lego Batman themed party. Resorting to DIY is a bit tiring I admit, but it’s all worth it seeing that our birthday boy really enjoyed his birthday party.

A One in a Minion Birthday Party

Children’s parties are a fun excuse for us parents to be like kids again even for a while and also allow us to show our creativity from conceptualizing the theme down to the actual organizing the party.

As for our son Cedric’s 6th birthday, we chose to have the Minions theme from the hit animated movie Despicable Me. We wanted the party to be simple yet enjoyable. We would like to share with you some of the Minion party ideas we had:

Invitation cards and decors. We had a simple custom-made party pass for the invitation. We also had a ready-made party banner where we just wrote Cedric’s name in it.  Each card cost us only Php 15 (USD 0.34) and the party banner is at Php 50 (USD 1.13). You could search a wide array of templates in the Internet such as this one

This party banner is simple and inexpensive but serves its purpose as backdrop very well

Costume. We wanted Cedric to look like a Minion but not too much that he might look like a mascot. So as for the costume, we had him wear a denim jumper, a yellow Minion shirt and a cute Minion cap from U R Gifted.

Cake. The cake has always been one of the highlights of Cedric’s birthday party. And for this Minion theme, we had a two-layered cake masterpiece by OC’s Kitchen. The Minion cake was a feast for both the eyes and tummy. At first our Cedric didn’t want to slice the cake ‘coz he said he didnt want to ruin it. 🙂

Games. Try these games for your next Minion party:

Freeze Ray. This is a musical and dance game. Let the kids dance, jump, run in circles while the music is playing. When you stop the music, they should not move like they were hit with by a Frezze Ray. Those who moved while the music is not playing would be out. Do this until only one child is left and is declared the winner.

Pin the Goggles on the Minion. The concept of this game is to let the kids pin the goggles on the Minion while being blindfolded. The one who pins the goggles closest to the right spot on the Minion’s head wins the game.

Party favors. We had a custom-made Minion loot box from The Chemist’s Bakeshop as giveaways. Inside the box are sweets and a Minion cookie.
