Pray for Boston

Pray for the Boston Marathon Bombing victims

Please pray for all our fellow runners in Boston affected by the bombing. Never let this tragedy dampen our spirits and hinder our passion to run. Run safe.

Camp Sinai, Pintong Bukawe Trails: The Merrell 2013 Trail Route

Here’s what to expect in the forthcoming Merrell Adventure Run 2013. Blog post courtesy of jazzrunner.

This may well be one of the most beautiful and varied 21k trail course outside of Tanay and it was good to have run these rarely used trails for the very first time. Camp Sinai in Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo, Rizal was near a former dump site where trash were as high as the mountains surrounding it that made the area a no-no visit or even pass through it.

Things change however, when the land-fill was closed a few years ago and this time, a burgeoning resort-like ambiance grew on its outskirts where outdoor activities have again flourished like mountain biking, trekking and now trail running.

With rolling hills, many technical terrain and about 1,200 ft of elevation gain, it’s not an easy course but the winding switchbacks to and from the river rewards you with stunning views of rural vistas, broad valleys where many sections offers sweeping views of the vast Sierra Madre Mountains.

Why do we run?

Reporter: Why are you doing this?

Forrest Gump: I just felt like running.

An advocate of running

Why run? Regular running effectively helps our body burn those extra calories and yes, lose weight. It promotes a healthy lifestyle. It helps boost our body’s immune system. It reduces the risk of heart attack by lowering the blood pressure. Women who run have a lower risk of having a breast cancer. Running helps in reducing bad cholesterol and even helps increase HDL cholesterol.

Running also helps boost our self esteem and discipline. Running helps relieve depression. And the list goes on.

I recently learned of, an advocacy to help runners continue to live a healthy lifestyle and to let others start the passion to run. Their website provides information on upcoming run events. Registration to race events is made easy with their user-friendly online registration portal. The website also features articles from runners to inspire, encourage, and educate fellow runners.

True to their advocacy, recently held an online weekend contest through their Facebook page. Winners will receive free race kits on the upcoming Rip the Road 3 to be held this April 14, 2013. A runner would just post a picture on Facebook page and put a caption on why he or she loves to run. Originally, the five most liked photos will win the free race kits. Then they made it Top 10! Wow! Contest duration was from April 5 to 7, 2013. Here are the winners of the contest.

Congratulations to all the winners! Hey, wait a minute. My photo is included there! hehe

Kudos to for inspiring runners.

Hong Kong: A fun family destination

October 2012, my family went to Hong Kong for a  short vacation. A short escape from being corporate slaves, hehe ( my wife and I are both working). This vacation is also our way of celebrating our 5th year anniversary as husband and wife, and parents to our son Cedric James.

Getting around Hong Kong

Going places in Hong Kong is quite easy as there are a lot of options for you to choose from. If you don’t mind spending money, then you could hire a cab and ask the driver to cruise you along places. But for the streetwise type of traveler, you can take a bus, a tram, or the MTR.

What’s good about the MTR is that there are many lines and interchange stations. My 5 year old son, who always has a fascination with trains, had a delight in riding the MTR. Tip, research on how to go to your destination beforehand and familiarize the different train lines. For example, if you are going to Hong Kong Disneyland you have to take the Tung Chung line and alight on Sunny Bay and Disneyland Resort interchange station.

I also suggest riding the double-decked tramcars just for the experience.

Hongkong Disneyland Resort and Hongkong Ocean Park

These two destinations were on top of our itinerary when we visited Hong Kong since we traveled with our 5 year old son. He really enjoyed these theme parks, the rides, the shows, the parade in Disneyland, and even the cable car at Ocean Park. Tip, if you are planning to include these two destinations in your Hong Kong itineraries you might want to give a whole day for your Disneyland visit.

We decided to stay in Disneyland’s Hollywood Hotel. It maybe a bit pricier than other hotels and inns in Hongkong but it is worth it specially when you are staying with kids and/or you love taking pictures.

Other recommended places ( though we weren’t able to visit due to our limited time of stay) are:

Macau, oh the ferry boat is a must try.
Ngong Ping 360, cable cars and giant Buddha
Ladies’ Market in Mong kok, ask for a bargain price
Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

What drives you?

It is not just running. It is PASSION.
